Performance Practice
This is one of Bach's greatest chamber works, originally for flute with obbligato (fully written-out) harpsichord. The three movements demonstrate Bach's mastery: sophisticated counterpoint (Andante), sublime expressiveness (Largo e dolce), and brilliant virtuosity (Presto). When transposed for alto recorder, it sits beautifully on the instrument. This work requires partnership with an excellent keyboardist who can realize Bach's complex harpsichord part.
Performance Goal: This is one of the great monuments of Baroque chamber music. Your performance requires complete technical mastery, deep contrapuntal awareness, and mature musical interpretation. The Largo e dolce is one of the most sublime moments in all of music - prepare to move listeners profoundly. This work belongs on graduate recitals and professional concerts.
